13 km from Portopetro, 16 km from Cala d’Or Center.
There are two more coves with the same name on Mallorca, one south of Magaluf, and the other on the Formentor headland. But Cala Figuera in the municipality of Santanyí is the best-known of the three, appreciated as it is by visitors as one of the most picturesque fishing ports in the Balearic Islands. It was even the location for a TV series called “Hotel Paradies” (Hotel Paradise) by ZDF (the second German TV channel).
It is hardly surprising, then, that Cala Figuera was and still is a favourite motif for numerous artists such as Bernareggi, Mandilego and Busser. And painters like Jesús Camargo, Andrés Pons Fullana, Cati Roig and Codorniu have also captured the charms of Cala Figuera in their works.
At the same time, it is an important base for fishermen – one of the main ones in Mallorca, in fact. Formed by the small coves of Caleta den Boira and Caleta en Busquets, there is documentation on this village dating to as far back as 1306. The famous Santanyí stone was loaded up for transportation in Cala Figuera. A shack for storing boats built in the mid-19th century was the first building here. The first house dates back to 1899. In 1938 the first church was erected; it has now been converted into a pizzeria. A small fish market and wharf were constructed in 1950, close to which numerous restaurants offer fish and seafood specialities, using raw materials brought in every day by the fishermen of Cala Figuera.
